Three Decades and Five Years of Being an Inspirational Designer
David Savage is a designer, an artist, a maker, a mentor, and an inspiration to everyone who is looking to take craftsmanship to the next level. As a designer, I find David inspirational. I believe true craftsmanship is when you care about what you are doing and doing the best you can.
He is a master of his craft and he never stops designing and creating unique pieces of furniture. Just by looking at the sofa that he personally crafted, you will be in awe as you run your hand over the curves and twists of his creation.
He does workshops and he inspires other designers a lot. Working with his team of highly skilled craftsmen and students, David Savage is able to produce original furniture pieces that are not only visually stunning but highly functional and high performing. His dining tables and his contemporary chairs are intricately crafted for several months to achieve perfection.
And when he does a furniture piece, he is not merely after the aesthetic charm but how the furniture will change the lives of its future owners. David believes that his creations shouldn’t simply be regarded as investments and assets but his creations should be part of one’s life. David says: “Furniture is something close to us. We sit in chairs; they surround and support us. Consequently, we are inextricably involved with them physically. For that reason I feel chairs should be expressive and should reflect the personality of the person of sculpture which embodies an identity and a character.”
35 years ago, David Savage was just one of the aspiring furniture makers in Europe. But with his idea of craftsmanship which goes some thing like: speed + skill = craftsmanship, he soared, and he soared real high. As what Toshio Odate, a Japanese master craftsman and editor of Fine Woodworking said: “anyone can cut a dovetail but a master does it quickly and better.”
David Savage Has a Story to Tell
David Savage doesn’t only design; he also knows how to interact with his clients and his creations. Thus, when you see his sketches, you will see a story being unfolded right in front of your eyes. The story is about the highlights and illustrations of craftsmanship in the forms of well-polished and well fined-tuned David-Savage-made furniture pieces.
He has his own technique in woodworking and he calls it “scrubbed finish.” Scrubbed finish is achieved when hot water, a small amount of soap, and bleach are utilized using a heavy bristle brush that will be used in scrubbing the tannins found in the wood. The results: a pale-colored furniture piece that has light-textured surface.

Rowden Farm Atelier is where David Savage’s world class woodworking courses and furniture making classes are held. But the most important thing that takes place at David Savage’s Atelier is the inception and crafting of contemporary furniture pieces that demonstrate shaped curves made by hands, pieces that are said to be radical in appearance.
