Oscars Provide Glitz and Glam, Plus Nice Surprises
February 25, 2008
Quite possibly the best surprise of last night’s Oscars was that Original Song award went to “Falling Slowly” from the film Once. Here’s the performance from the show.
Even better, after Glen Hansard made his short speech and the orchestra proceeded to cut off his writing/singing partner Markéta Irglová, Oscar host Jon Stewart brought her back on stage so she could add her thank you.
Newcomer Diablo Cody picked up best Original Screenplay for Juno, and best Adapted Screenplay went to No Country for Old Men writers Joel and Ethan Coen.
Best Picture went to No Country for Old Men, which also won for Director (Joel and Ethan Coen) and Supporting Actor (Javier Bardem). Best Actor went to Daniel Day-Lewis for his performance in There Will Be Blood, and Best Actress went to Marion Cotillard for her work in La Vie en Rose. Tilda Swinton picked up best Supporting Actress for her role in Michael Clayton.
Ratatouille won best Animated Feature; Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street won best Art Direction; There Will Be Blood won best Cinematography; Elizebeth: The Golden Age won best Costume Design; and La Vie en Rose won best Makeup.
The Bourne Ultimatum picked up best Film Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.
