First Snow DVD Review

Not that many people have heard of First Snow, and it’s a shame, because the film is a strange thriller that delivers solid acting and chills, plus a twist that’s not over the top but is sure to surprise viewers.

First Snow is about flooring salesman Jimmy Starks (played by the mega-talented Guy Pearce), a man with a dream of selling classic jukeboxes rather than flooring products. He has a girlfriend, Deirdre (played by Piper Perabo), and they seem to be struggling, but happy nonetheless.

When Jimmy crosses paths with traveling fortune teller Vacaro (played by J.K. Simmons), the future starts to look dangerous. Vacaro gives Jimmy two nominal keys to his future, then stops short of delivering a whopper, and Jimmy leaves thinking he’s been conned.

Then the two nominal predictions come true. After that, Jimmy’s doctor delivers the news that he has potentially fatal heart problems. All of which sends Jimmy running back Vacaro, who foretells that when the first snow falls, Jimmy will die.

While Jimmy tries desperately to avoid death, there are some people in his life that seem to be angry and possibly wanting to harm him, such as the guy he had to fire recently (Rick Gonzalez), and Jimmy’s best friend (Shea Whigham), who served time in prison for a crime they both committed and is now out of jail.
